Abnormal uterine bleeding accounts for over a third of all visits to a gynecology office. Many different women notice abnormal bleeding patterns over the course of their lifetime. If you ever notice that you're having spotting in between periods, this, in and of itself, is a reason to talk with your doctor. Sometimes it's just due to the form of contraception you're using. So your doctor can tell you if that's normal or not, based on their knowledge of your circumstances and the medication that you're on for contraception. And if that has been ruled out, then there's other things that need to be explored. Bleeding in between periods can be a sign of - but doesn't necessarily mean that it is - it can be a sign of things like endometrial polyps, cancers, different abnormalities of the pelvic organs, or infection. So after asking you more specific questions and performing an exam, the doctor can decide if further investigation is necessary.
