Arts, culture, food, architecture and history! Stone Town has it all!
The Old Fort is an ideal landmark to visit and learn about the history of Zanzibar in a nutshell.
One of the oldest buildings in Stone Town built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and later rebuilt by the Omanis in the 18th century.
As a cultural centre, an amphitheater was built in the 1990s and now hosts a variety of arts festivals. During the week, local performers can be seen preparing for events here.
Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We explored Stone Town to the fullest extent on foot. There are many guided tours available as well.
With enough research before arriving in Stone Town, we were able to find and explore several points of interest accessible to the public at no charge:
1. For panoramic views of Stone Town from the highest building visit Emerson Spice.
2. Shiv Shakti Temple (can also be seen from Emerson Spice)
3. Old Customs House where there are art exhibitions and musicians training for upcoming performances in an Omani style building
Our walking tour allowed us to immerse ourselves in the daily hustle and bustle of Stone Town. Our intention was to discover Stone Town in its raw form.
Stone Town is more than just a series of landmarks. We set out to indulge in the local authetic street food (keep a look out for more on this in our Stories/Highlights) and stroll along the narrow streets of a very charming part of Zanzibar.
We came across these must visit local food establishments:
1. Café Blue (for the most refreshing freshly prepared hibiscus juice)
2. The 189 Chizenga House (for Baobab flavoured gelato)
3. Ummi Urojo (for a must-try 'Urojo' popularly known as 'Zanzibar Mix')
A signature characteristic of Stone Town are the doors. Very few people leave Stone Town without marveling at the multiple door carvings decorating the entrances of homes and shops.
One could say the food and spices are another signature characteristic of Zanzibar. This is what we explored:
1. Darajani Market - the oldest Market in Zanzibar & the first point of formalized trade in East Africa.
2. Forodhani Market - a daily night food market with all the flavours of Zanzibar within one precinct.
