Rimworld has a pretty unique story that almost didn't happen if it weren't for a bug that creator, Tynan Sylvester failed at fixing with one of his many prototypes. At the time, Tynan, an author and a previous industry level designer working on Bioshock Infinite, had recently decided to work for himself as an indie developer.
He had his roots tinkering in the Unreal Tournament modding scene, winning many prizes and even getting recognition from Cliff Bleszinski. Tynan got his main inspiration for Rimworld from reading stories about the game, Dwarf Fortress from players in the community. The game itself didn't exactly gel with Tynan, but he was inspired to create a game that would garner the same kind of attention and have players telling their own stories for years to come.
Tynan and his team at Ludeon Studios would release their highly successful title in 2013 and till this day, the game continues to amaze players new and old and has produced not only countless stories, but also countless mods from people just like him in his early modding days.
