The Chartwell Mansion on 750 Bel Air Road was famous for being the mansion used in The Beverly Hillbillies intro. It’s a great example of California luxury, and represents the millionaire lifestyle from an older time. The luxury life you can live here is something to behold!
The Chartwell Estate was built all the way back in the 1930s, though and owned by a hotelier from Chicago — Arnold Kirkeby. Later, it was bought in 1986 by Jerry Perenchio, the CEO of Univision, for $14 million. After buying the Chartwell estate, the house was heavily renovated, and it took 5 years to complete the renovation. During this time, Perenchio added a lot of European furniture and antiques he had collected over the years, including a 9 figure private fine art collection — though after he died in 2017, most of those paintings went to the LA County Museum of Art. Eventually, some of the neighboring land was bought as well. Some of that land has history of its own — for instance, the Chartwell Estate now encompasses the former home of the late President Ronald Regan and his wife.
The main residence of the house looks big, but simple — there’s nothing garish or lavish about the limestone exterior, except for maybe the gardens around it. There’s no denying that the mansion is huge, however. The main residence has a 25,000 square foot interior, with 11 bedrooms and 18 bathrooms. The interior was designed by Henri Samuel, from France, and takes on a real European look. The main living area is lovely, decked out with most of Perenchio’s European furniture, which ties the interior of the room together. On the patio outside, there’s a fantastic view of the backyard, with hedges, trees, and a fountain at the bottom of a sloping hill.
Outside the mansion is 10 acres of land, on which Perenchio put millions of dollars into landscaping. After seeing some of these photos, do you think it paid off? Let us know in the comments! The gardens are absolutely gorgeous, particularly the rose garden, which is beautiful in its symmetry and feels very quaint. There are also two secret tunnels on the property! One leads to the giant pool and pool house located on the property, and the other takes you to some of the beautiful gardens, grottos, and koi ponds around the property — though you’d be forgiven for thinking it takes you somewhere more sinister, given that it looks like a spooky stone head. However, the real topper in terms of horticulture on the Chartwell grounds is the redwood garden.
The Chartwell Estate is one of the oldest, most famous homes in American history, and includes some presidential property — literally. The nice part really isn’t the interior, though — it’s the well tended gardens, redwood grove, secret tunnels, and history. At $150 million, you’re looking at quite the expensive purchase, and it’s hard to say just how much the home will be worth after the interior is modernized. Lachlan Murdoch certainly got a deal, though, only paying about 3/4ths of the asking price. Whether or not that price would continue to decline is a hypothetical that will never be answered now — the only question is whether or not the price of the home will go up, and whether it’s a good investment, or just flexing a luxury lifestyle. What do you think?
