GLOBALMAXIM: 23 February 2011 -- UNTV: United Nations, New York -- The United Nations (UN) Security Council (S-C) met last night (22 February) to discuss the escalating violence in Libya following reported attacks by Libyan forces on unarmed civilians; outside the Council, after the meeting, the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs B. Lynn Pascoe told reporters that "anyone that is inciting populations against themselves, asking some people to attack other people, particularly if some of those are peaceful demonstrators, is a very dangerous thing and a very bad thing to happen."
Pascoe also expressed concern about "threats of various kinds of retaliation" against the demonstrators.
According to media accounts, President Muammar al-Qadhafi went on state TV yesterday to call on his supporters to fight those protesting against his four decades in power and today two pilots were reported to have crashed their warplane and parachuted to safety rather than execute orders to bomb the opposition-held city of Benghazi.
Libyan Deputy Ambassador Ibrahim Omar Al Dabashi, breaking ranks with the regime, pointed out that "the people have no arms" and said that "the Qadhafi statement was just a call for his collaborators to start the genocide against the Libyan people."
The President of the Security Council for the month of February, Brazilian Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, read a statement from the Council expressing "grave concern" at the situation in Libya and condemning the "violence and use of force against civilians".
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon cut short a visit to Los Angeles to return to United Nations Headquarters today to address the crisis in Libya, calling for punishment of those using violence against civilians. He also spent 40 minutes on the phone with the Libyan leader on Monday.
The Secretary-General applauded the decision of the Arab League to suspend Libya and has spoken repeatedly with leaders of the region in the weeks since unrest first erupted in Tunisia in January.
