He called himself the Humanist. On Facebook, Pakistani student Mashal Khan spoke up for people who felt ostracised for being different; whether it was skin colour or sexual identity, he condemned their mistreatment saying it stemmed from fear.
Last week, that voice of comfort was silenced. His fellow students accused him of blasphemy and bashed him to death in a sickening assault. He's the latest victim in a society where a law that prohibits blasphemy is sometimes used by vigilantes to justify murder. And now, despite the dangers, protesters say enough is enough.
