This Sunday marks the start of one of the most important events of the year for New Japan pro Wrestling: The New Japan Cup.
So what is it?
Basically it’s a single elimination annual bracket tournament that awards the winner a world heavyweight title shot. It’s been going since 2005 and is the first really big opportunity to start setting up the year’s new storylines and rivalries. The events that come before it are often tied to last year’s storylines and what happened at Wrestle Kingdom. The New Japan Cup can function a little like hitting a bit of a reset button.
You don’t want to miss the new japan cup, and for what it’s worth, 2021’s final with Shingo Takagi against Will Ospreay was one of the best wrestling matches I’ve ever seen.
This year there are 24 participants and the tournament runs for 16 days from March 5, available to watch on New Japan World.
