In Beijing Opera, different roles are distinguished by the design of the actor's facial makeup, or lianpu. The pattern, color, and lines of the design reveal the character's age, status, and disposition. Lead male and female roles apply light makeup, usually a rosy foundation with darkened brows, eyes, and lips. Clowns and "Painted Face" male roles apply makeup to create complicated designs that obscure their faces. The clown applies a patch of white makeup to his face, a design called "Tofu Face.
