Ramil Guliyev wins men's 200 m final at World Athletics Championships 2017 as Wayde van Niekerk takes silver
The Turkish runner surprised the London Stadium crowd by beating favourite Wayde van Niekerk to the gold
Isaac Makwala was left pig sick after the medal of his dreams went to an unknown Azerbaijani running for Turkey.
Wayde van Niekerk had the same queasy feeling after his ambition of a golden double was snatched from him by Ramil Guliyev.
Guliyev, a silver medallist in last year’s Europeans but a stranger to global success, took the men’s 200 metres title in 20.09 seconds.
A highly emotional Van Niekerk, the 400m champion, pipped Trinidad’s Jereem Richards to silver in 20.11secs with Londoner Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake (20.24) a highly creditable fourth.
But there was disappointment for the sell-out London Stadium crowd which had turned up hoping to witness a happy ending to Makwala’s fairy tale.
Guliyev succeeds Usain Bolt who has owned the title since winning the first of four successive titles in 2009.
