STORYLINE:
Mexico began a marathon review of vote tallies on Wednesday to determine whether conservative candidate Felipe Calderon really won the tight presidential race, while his leftist challenger insisted he was victorious and threatened to ignore the final count.
In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Calderon said he would be willing to include his charismatic challenger in his Cabinet, in an effort to build a coalition government and avoid weeks of political impasse.
But he said he didn't think Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador would agree, adding that the two men hadn't talked since the election.
"I don't think he'd accept it," he said. "I would like us to join forces."
With the election still undecided, election workers across the country began the official count, adding up the tallies compiled on election day by polling-station volunteers.
By law, they must work around the clock in an effort expected to take days.
Calderon said that he hadn't talked to Lopez Obrador since the election and added that he didn't think the battle over the presidency would have any long-term negative effects on Mexico's economy.
He also commented on Mexico's relations with wealthy neighbour the US which draws thousands of economic migrants to cross the border and head north every year.
"I want to establish a very constructive relationship with the US, without bowing my head or lowering my eyes," he said.
