Regular consumption of caffeinated coffee may help prevent the return of colon cancer after treatment and improve the chances of a cure, according to a new, large study led by Dr. Charles S. Fuchs of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

No one has ever looked at coffee and outcome in cancer patients before, and I think it’s an important finding in part because it speaks to biology—the same biologic processes that we think coffee may impact people’s general health. It appears to benefit specifically patients who have been treated for colon cancer.
There is a benefit for individuals who are consuming two to three cups per day. There was a greater benefit for individuals who drank four or more cups. Now, I don’t know how that would translate into any specific recommendation. I would propose that if you are a coffee drinker and you've been treated for colon cancer, well, don’t stop. Should somebody who has been treated for colon cancer who is not drinking coffee necessarily assume the habit of drinking coffee, I really couldn’t speak to that. I don’t think it’s proper to know just based on this one study, but it certainly speaks to a potential dietary habit that might significantly improve the outcome for patients.
