In this video Heimler walks you through Unit 3 Topic 4 (3.4) of the AP Government curriculum which is all about the first amendment's protection of the freedom of the press.
The freedom of the press is necessary to a democracy because the power to govern is in the hands of the people, and therefore we need to know what our elected representatives are up to.
Whenever the government has tried to enact prior restraint, the Supreme Court has generally set the bar pretty high for approval. The landmark case of New York Times v. United States (required case) shows just how high the bar for prior restraint is.
