When we are doing lost wax casting, we need to make a mold to contain the melted metal. This mold needs to be very precise to ensure that the final product meets the requirements. One common method for making molds is investment casting.
The investment casting process can be roughly divided into several steps:
Making a prototype: First, we need to make a prototype, usually using wax. This prototype is a replica of the final product we want to cast.
Coating: Then, we need to coat the prototype with a special coating called investment material. This coating will form a hard shell during the firing process to carry the molten metal.
Firing: After the investment material coating is completed, it needs to be put into an oven for firing. The purpose of firing is to burn off the wax from the investment material, leaving behind a hollow mold.
Pouring: When the mold is fired, we need to put it into a casting machine and pour it with molten metal. The molten metal will fill the voids in the mold and form the final product.
Breaking the mold: Finally, we need to break the hard shell, take out the cast product, and do further processing and finishing.
This is the general process of investment casting. Although the process may be complicated, we can obtain very high-precision and high-quality cast products through careful production.
