(3 Apr 2014) The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Atlanta said on Wednesday he suspects the church will ultimately sell a 2.2 (m) million US dollar mansion built for his use.
"I'm disappointed in myself," said Atlanta Archbishop Wilton Gregory in an interview with The Associated Press.
Gregory said that he accepts blame for not consulting enough with members of the church before building the expansive residence in one of Atlanta's plush neighbourhoods.
The Roman Catholic bishop said he wants to consult with several church councils before making a final decision but added that he believes the recommendation will be to sell the property.
The millions needed to build the home came from a single generous donation from Joseph Mitchell, nephew of Gone with the Wind author Margaret Mitchell.
Mitchell left much of his estate to the Archdiocese - some 15 (m) million US dollars.
In addition to the two million US dollars spent on the home - seven and a half went to improvements on the cathedral and less than four million went to charity.
Archbishop Gregory moved into the mansion in January, after selling his old home to Christ the King Cathedral so it could expand.
Local Catholics have criticised Gregory for not following the example of austerity set by Pope Francis.
