Even tho every sword swing is parryable, it is not easy to parry Gwyn to death. Here is a detailed guide on how to parry Gwyn safely and reliably.
IMPORTANT STUFF
- Gwyn has a fast sword swing that starts the four hit combo. It is impossible to reaction parry so blocking is the way to go
- Best shields for that are Black Knight Shield (drops from B. Knights), Dragon Crest Shield (Valley of Drakes) and Sunlight Shield (drops from Solaire). They have good physical and fire defence and can parry obviously.
- Hornet Ring is very useful (Sif boss fight, behind the grave)
- Distance between you and Gwyn is VERY important. The flames extent the range of Gwyn's swings and you can't parry hot air. You have to be within the range of Gwyn's sword but far enough to outrange the throw and kick moves without rolling.
- The throw is punishable but Gwyn recovers fast from the kick animation and can rarely do the fast sword swing immediately after.
ALL PARRYTIMINGS EXPLAINED
In the video the parrytiming icons are placed near the part of the screen you should be watching to spot the time to hit the parry button.
Low jump attack (01:43)
- Usually one of the two moves Gwyn can start with. Running towards Gwyn helps to parry it.
- Keep an eye on the sword. During travel time it points towards left. As soon as Gwyn raises it to point up to attack, hit the parry button.
High jump attack (02:00)
- One of the two moves Gwyn can start with. Running towards Gwyn helps to parry it.
- Parry time is when Gwyn has reached the top of his jump and begins to come down and attack. It is easy to parry too soon so let him be high and out from the screen a fraction of a second before parrying.
Fast swing to 4 hit combo (02:14)
- First swing is way too fast to parry. Setup parry works here so keep your shield up always and block this first hit and parry the second.
- After blocking the first hit Gwyn stays still for a moment and then moves his sword little more behind him before attacking. Hit the parry button when he begins to move the sword behind him.
Slow swipe to combo (02:34)
- Can do 0-2 moves after the slow swipe
- It is slower than the fast swing but not that slow that it is easily spotted without practise. It will break your guard when using medium shields so you need to parry or dodge it.
- Parry time is when Gwyn's sword points up (behind Gwyn, away from you) and Gwyn begins to attack.
Running thrust (02:47)
- Gwyn uses this to close in the distance if he backsteps or you wander further away from him than you should (stay near but far enough to avoid the kick without rolling)
- The distance is the key here. Just parry immediately when you identify this attack. If you were close enough, you usually parry him.
