Coastal circulation around India is characterised by seasonal reversal of East/West India Coastal Currents. Availability of observations from the Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers, deployed in the slope/shelf regions in the coastal waters around the country, enhanced our understanding on the variation the coastal currents in different time scales. These observations provided valuable insights on how the coastal currents vary with depth as well. Continuous observations from the ADCPs and other observation platforms have helped us to build the numerical ocean models that can simulate the space-time structure of the coastal circulations with reasonable accuracy. Such models play important roles in the operational ocean state predictions. In this talk, a brief overview on the observed features of the coastal circulation and our capacity to numerically model them are presented.
