STORYLINE
Papal envoy Cardinal Pio Laghi met US Secretary of State Colin Powell in Washington DC on Thursday.
Powell and Laghi met behind closed doors at the State Department.
Laghi had delivered a letter from Pope John Paul II to President George W. Bush on Wednesday.
The message stated war would be a "defeat for humanity" and would be neither morally nor legally justified.
