Kyoto at the end of the Edo period was the center of the Sonnoh Johi movement. Sonnoh Johi movement is the Movement advocating reverence for the Emperor and the expulsion of foreigners. Those who held this thought were known as “Sonnoh johi ha”.
Among the Sonnoh johi ha”, there was a group of samurai known as "Hitokiri(manslayer)" who carried out assassination activities in Kyoto.
They were known as the " Four legendary manslayers at the end of the Edo period," and their assassination of important figures was a damnation that intimidate people of Kyoto.
