Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin attended the unveiling ceremony of a statue of the late Soviet and Russian cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich, on Thursday.
The statue, showing Rostropovich playing the cello, is located in the center of Moscow, where he lived with his wife, singer Galina Vishnevskaya.
The unveiling of the statue was the main event of the 3rd International Festival of Mstislav Rostropovich, which began on March 27, the birthday of the musician who died in 2007.
Putin promised Rostropovich's widow Galina Vishnevskaya that he would support the establishment of the Center of Cultural Heritage of Rostropovich in Moscow and said he is proud to have been acquainted with the famous musician.
According to the prime minister, the magnificent statue will "certainly beautify the capital."
Vishnevskaya thanked all who came "to honor the memory of the great citizen of Russia", and also recalled that Rostropovich had a difficult career, but "he did not accept any failures or disappointments in his art".
After the ceremony, Putin and other guests laid flowers at the statue.
