Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes and Maj. Gen. Paul Knapp, who commands the Wisconsin National Guard, spoke on Thursday about the ongoing response to the protests that were sparked by the shooting of Black man Jacob Blake by police this past weekend, with Evers saying that he had spoken with President Donald Trump and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows about deployment of the National Guard.

He said he told Trump and Meadows they had called in the guard, and were expanding its "footprint," and Knapp was looking into getting help from other states. The governor said that they did not need Homeland Security in the state, but asked the White House to work with Knapp on determining assets.

Evers also responded to a report that Blake, 29, was in handcuffs in hospital, saying "hell yes" he was concerned about the news, if true, and said he hopes they can find a "better way for him to get better than that."

Asked about a video allegedly showing what appears to be law enforcement officials thanking the teenager who has been charged in the shooting deaths of two people and injury of a third during protests on Tuesday night in Kenosha, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said he was concerned and would hope someone would come forward to provide "corrective action and suggestions" to the official on camera. Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes added that if the suspect is being "celebrated as a vigilante, as a militia man then that's ridiculous."
