In 2002, Kigali City Council and the Rwandan Government invited the Aegis Trust to establish the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Rwanda's
capital, at a site where some 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi are buried. Comprising exhibitions, memorial gardens and educational facilities, the Memorial opened in 2004 and continues to be managed by Aegis on behalf of the National Commission for the fight against Genocide (CNLG).
This short film tells the story of the Memorial's creation; how Aegis came to be invited to undertake the work, how its approach was modelled on the National Holocaust Centre in the UK. The film also looks briefly at how the Centre has grown and developed in its first ten years.
The film features interviews with Aegis CEO and co-founder Dr James Smith; his fellow co-founder Dr Stephen Smith; Robert Bayigamba, Rwanda's Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture in 2004; Theoneste Mutsindashyaka, Mayor of Kigali in 2004; and Franco Kanimba, Aegis' Director of Special Projects, involved in managing both the construction of the Centre in 2004 and Phase One of its expansion in 2014.
