Should you aim for zero thyroid antibodies if you have Hashimoto’s? In general, it’s best to try and get your thyroid antibodies as low as possible but if you aren’t able to get them down to zero you don’t have to start stressing just yet. The presence of thyroid antibodies doesn’t guarantee that you will develop Hashimoto’s but it does put you at increased risk for developing hypothyroidism. The higher your antibodies the higher your risk of of hypothyroidism. To make matters a little more confusing, thyroid antibodies do not always correlate with your disease state. In many cases, higher thyroid antibodies means more thyroid gland damage but this isn’t always true. You can have high thyroid antibodies and little thyroid damage or vice versa. Having said all of this, the presence of thyroid antibodies is abnormal which means it’s still a good idea to try and get them as low as possible but don’t stress too much if you can’t. Pay attention to both thyroid function and thyroid antibodies to get a better idea of thyroid function. #hashimotos #hashimotosthyroiditis #hashi #thyroidantibodies #tpoantibodies
