IWC Pilot Mark XVI Review - Reference IW325519
There comes a time when a son must seek his own fortune, and that's the case for this 39mm stainless steel IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XVI "Son" (Ref. 3255-19). Though generally available only as part of the 2012 special series with the Ref. 5009 Big Pilot "Father," this Mark XVI represents a rare opportunity to purchase a solo model from this pair WITHOUT case back personalized engraving.
The 2012 IWC Pilot's Watch Father and Son special series was the second such offering since 2008, but the common threads between these runs were the low (but not limited) production and the requirement that both watches be purchased as a unit.
Naturally, collectors who favor the style or size of one model find themselves with a loss for options. Even worse, the common practice at the time of original retails was for the customer to have both the IWC Big Pilot Father and Pilot Mark XVI personalized with initials, family crests, or dedications. Comparatively few escaped this kind of indelible sentiment... but the IWC Mark XVI "Son" offered by thewatchbox.com is "tabula rasa."
IWC's Father and Son watches feature explosive rhodium-plated sunburst dials that jump from the confines of the case. In direct light, the effect is strobe-like; interior light elicits a soft radiance like a full moon on a clear night. The blackened hands and matching calibrations preserve the key aesthetic of IWC's 1948-present "Mark" series of pilot watches.
Inside the brushed steel case, IWC equips the Pilot Mark XVI "Son" with a caliber 30110 automatic movement. Based on the time-tested ETA 2892-A2, this rugged caliber boasts a slim profile to match; the result is that the Mark XVI 3255 measures only 11mm thick. A 42-hour power reserve, hacking (stop) seconds, and a modern 4hz (28,800 VpH) beat rate round out the list of refinements.
