Johannes Stoetter: "Different as my other animal illiusions I found out the position of the mandrill by experimenting with body positions.
A man wanted to surprise his girlfriend for her birthday with a bodypainting by me, so we met and spoke about possible motives. The woman said she would like to be painted together with her boyfriend and if possible as an animal illiusion. First I explained that it is not easy to create animal illusions and that I would have to try sketches for some time... but after they showed me a photo where they both were in an interesting position (she was lying with her back on his back), I decided that we can try working and experimenting on that position. After a few tries I suddenly visionised the monkey. I took some photos and the days after I sketched and painted the mandrill, soon I painted also the background and as a final work I created this mandrill by painting the two bodies.
The most difficult part for the models was the man's role to hold the woman's weight. So I was able to paint the woman while she was lying in that position on the ground. As she is a fitness trainer she was very good in holding the position for a longer time, which made it easier for me to paint. The whole painting took me about four hours, I had one assistant to help painting the base colors and doing the work around.
I think the special thing about the mandrill is his colorful face."
