Nel has chosen Plymouth Charter Township in the state of Michigan as the location for its future alkaline and PEM electrolyzer factory in the United States. The Norwegian company had previously announced its intention to establish a presence in the US. The selection of Plymouth Charter Township is likely influenced by the incentives provided by local authorities. Through the Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF), the state will provide a $10 million grant to the project, along with an additional $6.25 million in tax benefits. Nel's CEO, Håkon Volldal, cites the highly skilled workforce, access to universities and research institutions, and proximity to partner General Motors as reasons for choosing the location. The future Nel factory in the US is expected to become one of the largest electrolyzer manufacturing facilities worldwide, with a production capacity of 4 GW per year. It will produce both PEM and alkaline electrolyzers and will complement Nel's existing facility in Wallingford, Connecticut. The construction of the plant will be carried out in stages to accommodate the gradual increase in demand, and the final investment decision will be announced at a later date.
