Down south several warnings are in place including a road snowfall warning for Lewis pass, Porters Pass, Haast Pass, Crown Range Road, Lindis Pass (SH8) and the Dunedin to Waitati Highway (SH1).
Orange snow warnings are also in place for Inland Canterbury above 300 metres and Marlborough south of Ward.
A strong wind watch is in place for Fiordland with severe gales expected at times.
MetService warned on Monday a "very cold south to southeast flow" will bring snow to low levels in many parts of the South Island.
"The snow in Southland and Otago has eased Sunday evening, and the risk of further significant heavy snow in these areas has passed," the forecaster said.
