Controlling our senses (Indriya Nigraha) is a practice, in which a person avoids the extremes of Sensory pleasures. The one who has won over his/her senses, i.e. he/she has the control over senses and not the senses controlling the person is called as "JITENDRIYA"
One whose mind remains calm and unperturbed is called a sthita pragnya. Such a person is not overjoyed by pleasure. Neither is he depressed or sorrowful when something bad or disastrous happens. Five senses are under the control of a sthita pragnya.
This quality is extremely important without which one cannot realize the Supreme Brahman and attain Moksha, nor can he person guide others to moksha.
So it is essential for a Guru to be an JITENDIRAYA. A living example of JITENDRIYA is Jagadguru Sri Bharati Teertha Mahaswaamin of Dakshinammnaya Sringeri Sharada Peetha.
