Here is my best kept secret to finding a great voice! Find tongue tension by doing the following vocal tasks: nose breathing, mouth breathing, humming, singing a vowel, singing a sustained vowel, staccato vowel, glottal vowels, and various inflections on the same vowel or hum. If the area under your chin gets hard and bumps down (as in swallowing), that is how you can know the tongue root is tensing. I give you some of my favorite approaches for relaxing the tongue and then doing these tasks again without the tension. It's a quick and very effective voice warm-up. Perfect for the actor's voice or for the singer.
