X is Not a Small Country explores our current post-global condition by observing at different scales —territories, cities, infrastructures, platforms, bodies, objects—the processes of de-globalisation and geopolitical realignment that have, in many cases, been accelerated and distorted in rapidly evolving cycles of flux and revision during the current pandemic.
Twelve years after the global financial crisis exposed the flaws of globalisation, what was once a euphoria of interconnectedness has given rise to a more complex condition. Trade wars, refugee crises, rising nationalism, Brexit—and now, a global pandemic—are disrupting and reordering the transnational flow of people, ideas and resources in ever more tangled ways.
As pathways once taken for granted are abruptly obstructed, while others previously thought inconceivable appear to suddenly open up, what has been brought into stark relief are the rifts and shifting alliances among governments, ideologies, corporations and citizens that are destabilising notions of the global.
The exhibition, which was conceived prior to the pandemic, aims to explore our post-global context. Its title refers to an iconic 1934 poster (“Portugal is not a small country”) by Henrique Galvão that promoted the then-nationalist government’s idea of Portugal as a “pluricontinental” nation whose overseas possessions were not colonies, but rather integral parts of sovereign territory. The ways in which many of these former colonial relationships have now been upended formed a starting point for the show.
The exhibition includes projects by international practitioners working across design, architecture and art, who investigate, articulate and critique the current, convoluted state of the world from multiple geographic perspectives: Bard Studio (Rupali Gupte e Prasad Shetty), Bricklab (Abdulrahman Hisham Gazzaz and Turki Hisham Gazzaz), Ibiye Camp, Revital Cohen and Tuur van Balen, He Jing, Liam Young, Paulo Moreira, Rael San Fratello Studio (Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello), and Wolfgang Tillmans.

X não É Um País Pequeno – Desvendar a Era Pós-Global explora a nossa atual condição pós-global, observando em diferentes escalas — territórios, cidades, infraestruturas, plataformas, corpos, objetos — os processos de desglobalização e realinhamento geopolítico que, em muitos casos, foram acelerados e distorcidos em ciclos de fluxo e revisão em rápida evolução durante a atual pandemia.
Doze anos após a crise financeira global ter exposto as falhas da globalização, o que em tempos foi uma euforia de interconetividade deu origem a uma condição mais complexa. Guerras comerciais, crises de refugiados, nacionalismo crescente, Brexit — e, agora, uma pandemia global — estão a perturbar e a reordenar o fluxo transnacional de pessoas, ideias e recursos de formas cada vez mais confusas.
À medida que as vias antes tomadas como garantidas são abruptamente obstruídas, enquanto outras, outrora consideradas inconcebíveis, parecem abrir-se de repente, tornaram-se óbvias as clivagens e alianças mutáveis entre governos, ideologias, empresas e cidadãos que estão a destabilizar os conceitos de global.
A exposição, que foi planeada antes da pandemia, irá explorar o nosso atual contexto pós-global. O título da exposição refere-se a um cartaz icónico de Henrique Galvão (“Portugal não é um país pequeno”) que em 1934 promovia a ideia nacionalista do então governo Portugal: uma nação “pluricontinental” cujas possessões ultramarinas não eram colónias, mas sim partes integrantes do território soberano.
As formas como muitas destas antigas relações coloniais foram alteradas formaram um ponto de partida para a exposição.
A exposição apresenta nove projetos recentemente criados por profissionais internacionais que trabalham em design, arquitetura e arte e que investigam, articulam e criticam o atual estado convoluto do mundo a partir de múltiplas perspetivas geográficas: Bard Studio (Rupali Gupte e Prasad Shetty), Bricklab (Abdulrahman Hisham Gazzaz e Turki Hisham Gazzaz), Ibiye Camp, Revital Cohen & Tuur van Balen, He Jing, Liam Young, Paulo Moreira, Rael San Fratello (Ronald Rael e Virginia San Fratello) e Wolfgang Tillmans.
