Historically, psychological research has been used both to fight and to perpetuate racism.
More than 50 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King addressed the American Psychological Association and challenged psychologists and all social scientists to “tell it like it is” to help change a society “poisoned to its soul by racism.”
But have we?
Increasingly, the answer to that question is yes. Psychologists’ research is pinpointing the causes of racism and its nefarious effects, which include dramatic health disparities as we’ve seen with the COVID-19 pandemic. Psychologists are also designing interventions to mitigate those effects and working with policymakers to tackle racial disparities in the workplace, in policing, in housing and more.
But to truly meet King’s challenge, we need to increase that research, develop more interventions and deliver them to our communities. In this Main Stage Event, experts in the science of racism will tell us how.
If we are serious about social justice, it is time to understand the science that supports the solutions.
