1. LANGUAGE: Bhumij is an Austroasiatic language belonging to the Munda subfamily, related to Ho, Mundari, and Santali, primarily spoken by Bhumij peoples in the Jharkhand, Odisha & West Bengal, which was invented between 1981-92 by Ol Guru Mahendra Nath Sardar.
2. FESTIVALS: The Karama Festival is widely celebrated and popular among the tribal Groups, Karam festival is celebrated in the months of Sep-Oct, During this event their unmarried boys collect and transplant a twig of karma plant with great pomp and ceremony amidst feast , drink and dance by singing their folk songs with the tune of music, Dhulla puja is celebrated during the month of April&May, asarhi during transplantation of paddy seedlings.
3. DRESSES & ORNAMENTS: The Bhumij men traditionally wear a short loin cloth (lengti), while the women wear short, coarse white sarees purchased from local weavers that cover their bodies above the knees. However, as they have interacted more with caste Hindus, their clothing has started to resemble that of their neighbors.
Women like to wear brass jewelry such as nose rings, earrings, necklaces, armlets. Wealthy women wear gold jewelry on special occasions to enhance their appearance.
4. SOCIAL CONTROL: The Bhumijs have community councils at the village and regional levels. The village council is led by the mundmanik, who is assisted by the sacerdotal head, the dehuri/laya, village elders, and a messenger. The regional council is headed by the sardar, with assistance from the mundmaniks of component settlements. The posts of mundmanik and sardar are hereditary.
5. RELIGIONS BELIEFS: The Bhumijs have their own tribal religion that combines animism with some Hindu elements. They worship marangburu and Sing bonga (the Sun God) as their supreme deities, and also have other gods like jahir buru, karakata, baghut, baram, deoshali, buru, and Gram Deota. These gods represent various aspects of nature and village life, and are often worshipped in sacred groves called jahirthan.
