In this segment of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation, Adam Yamaguchi meets with pilot and inventor Blair White to learn how he adapted the airplane evacuation slide to be used on buildings with up to four stories.
With his company Slide to Safety, White's goal is to make building evacuation quicker and more efficient for those trapped taller buildings. On airplanes, the evacuation slide takes about 90 seconds to inflate; the Slide to Safety inflates much faster, taking under 6 seconds. And unlike a car's airbags, the Slide to Safety can be deployed multiple times.
The key to such rapid inflation is a similar concept used in safety slides on airplanes: compressed air flows through an aspirator, and valves open to pull in ambient air.
