Late in the afternoon on July 14, 1974, the Jackals Motorcycle Club and Washington State Patrol had a “peaceful confrontation” in the parking lot of Lake Sammamish State Park. The bikers had been smoking pot and being rowdy, so police had been called to enforce order. While this footage is commonly misidentified as a search for the missing Janice Ott and Denise Naslund, in fact their disappearance was not reported to police until the next day. Police later confiscated the film as they fruitlessly searched for any sign of the women or their abductor.
Denise’s friend Nancy Bettema recalled their group picnicking on a blanket near the area in her statement to police: “We parked on a grassy field before the main parking lot. We walked along the grass and sat about 200 feet in front of the restroom near the end of the parking area. I saw several motorcycle people in the area. Later in the afternoon, there were quite a few in the parking area near the restroom we were sitting in front of.” Denise disappeared at about 4:30pm.
After news of the abductions hit the press, a woman named Renee Schoenhals came forward to say she had been in the same vicinity that afternoon, and had seen a young white man with his arm in a sling, talking to the motorcycle group. She described him as 5’10, medium build, shirtless, and tanned, with dark blonde, curly hair. She noticed him circling the area and returning at least twice.
This KOMO News footage is best known for the two beige VW Beetles [seen in the background for two seconds at :10], wedged in by a line of patrol cars. According to investigator Bob Keppel, the VW to the far left was parked in the same location described by Janice Graham. She’d had a close encounter earlier that day with the suspect, who had tried to lure her into a similar car under that same tree.
During his final confessions to Keppel in 1989, Ted Bundy tacitly admitted to the abductions that day at Lake Sammamish. However, when shown an image of the VW in question, Bundy denied that it was his, or that he’d even been present while police were there at all:
“No. I think this is -- as you doubt discovered, there are a lot of light colored Volkswagens. And I don't mean to burst your bubble. That is an interesting coincidence. But, God, you would have never seen me in Lake Sammamish State Park again with all that heat. That's a lot of heat there. That would have been fairly memorable. No, I'm most certain that that couldn't be me…”
