This is a comparison of my existing sleeping mat the R3.2 Exped SIM Lite UL 3.8 versus the latest and greatest R4.5 mat from Thermarest - the Neoair X-Lite NXT.
The Neoair is 10years newer, and it shows in the stats with the mat being warmer, lighter, and smaller. But you guessed it - the Neoair also comes with an eye-watering price tag!
I'd been finding I could do with a little more warmth camping in freezing shoulder season conditions in late autumn, and on advice I found out that an R4 is recommended for 4 season use with my current mat being R3.2.
The Thermarest X-Lite NXT RW seems to be at the forefront of weight, size and warmth and after getting my head around the price I clicked the button and had a new mat in regular wide arriving via courier.
My existing mat was long, wide and rectangular. This was because I bought it as part of a pair that strap together into a double bed. I wasn't ready to go to the standard width as I felt my arms wouldn't stay off the ground, hence I selected the wide size.
