The Battle of Gallipoli was a military campaign in the First World War that took place on the Gallipoli peninsula (now Gelibolu) from February 1915 to January 1916. The Allies, mainly Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand, tried to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, by forcing a passage through the Dardanelles Strait. The Ottomans, supported by Germany and Austria-Hungary, resisted the invasion and inflicted heavy casualties on the invaders. The campaign ended with the withdrawal of the Allied forces after failing to achieve their objectives.
The Battle of Gallipoli had significant implications for both the Turkish and the New Zealand people. For the Turks, the battle was a major victory that boosted their national pride and cemented their resistance against the Allied powers. The battle also marked the emergence of Mustafa Kemal (later Atatürk), who became the founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey. For the New Zealanders, the battle was a tragic loss that resulted in over 7,000 casualties, the highest proportion of any nation involved. The battle also shaped their national identity and sense of belonging to the British Empire. The anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, April 25, is commemorated as Anzac Day in both Australia and New Zealand.
CAUTION!
I won't tolerate any racist, discriminatory or in any other form inappropriate comments! This song neither glorifies war, nor National Socialism, but should be considered as a historical work.
"No, we don't glorify anything, we just tell stories about things that have happened." (Rikard Sundén, Sabaton)
