I read that the EG4 Lifepower4 battery had recently been upgraded with new features but since I’d recently purchased mine, I didn’t know if it included these features, so this video shows what I did to confirm.

With off grid solar, batteries are a critical component to any system. Since most DIY solar systems are built to power residential and RV applications, battery safety is something that needs to be carefully considered in the initial design of a solar system.

I had looked at the LifePower 4 batteries along with the EG4 LL batteries before I started building a battery back up for our solar system. The EG4 LL AKA Lithium Lifetime Battery was packed with more features than most other batteries I’d seen available.

Listening to others the EG4 Lifepower 4 battery was commonly referenced as their “Budget Battery”, I guess since there was another more expensive model. Batteries are expensive and nothing about a $1,400 battery sounded like a budget model.

What I find interesting is that EG4 decided to upgrade the Lifepower4 battery a few months ago. The most noticeable upgrade was a fire suppression system and this helped the battery get approved and listed for UL 1973. This should really help these sell into systems where folks were subject to inspections and UL listed equipment.

With these changes (and no price increase so far) these are great solar batteries at a cost so low that most couldn’t build a comparable battery DIY with the same features, much less UL Listing, Fire Suppression and a five year warranty.

If you don’t know much about lithium batteries and think they’re all fireballs waiting to explode without provocation, LifePo4 batteries are considerably safer than most other lithium ion battery chemistries. They are well-suited for applications where longevity and safety are critical (like residential solar).

Overall, while both lithium batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries have their respective advantages and applications, LiFePO4 batteries are generally considered to be safer due to their superior chemical make up. In addition,

Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries (LiFePO4): LiFePO4 batteries are known for their superior thermal stability. They are less likely to experience thermal runaway even under extreme conditions, making them inherently safer

LiFePO4 batteries are more tolerant to overcharging and overdischarging compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries.
They have a longer cycle life compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries.
