This May the European Rewilding Network (ERN) is hosted its 11th ‘Rewilding Intro’ event, a mini-webinar series through which ERN initiatives share their #rewilding success stories.
This time we welcome Tero Mustonen, Chair and President of Snowchange, who received the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize for Europe, which honors the achievements and leadership of grassroots environmental activists from around the world. Tero presents the extensive work being done by the Snowchange cooperative to restore Finnish peatlands, rivers and forests.
In 2017, with support from Rewilding Europe, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and other partners, Snowchange initiated the Landscape Rewilding Programme. The aim of the programme is to develop landscape rewilding initiatives across Finland, leveraging a combination of indigenous and traditional knowledge and Western science.
The first five years have seen Snowchange rewild 52,000 hectares of peatland and forest across multiple Finnish river catchments. Four sites within the Landscape Rewilding Programme – the Kivisuo Peatland, Näätämö Basin, Koitajoki Basin, and Lake Kuivasjärvi – are members of Rewilding Europe’s European Rewilding Network since 2022.
