🚨SMFM and ACOG recommend that pregnant people receive a COVID-19 booster shot at least 6 months after their primary series with Pfizer or Moderna and at least 2 months after their primary vaccination with JJ.
➡️The booster should be given at any stage during pregnancy and postpartum.
➡️A COVID-19 booster, along with the original series of vaccine doses, can be administered along with other vaccines(ie flu).
✔️Reports and research show that pregnant and recently pregnant persons have a higher risk for more severe illness from COVID-19 than nonpregnant persons.
✔️Pregnant persons with COVID-19 and symptoms are more likely than nonpregnant persons with COVID-19 and symptoms to need care in an ICU, to need a ventilator, or to die from the illness.
➡️Still, the overall risk of severe illness and death for pregnant persons is low.
✔️Pregnant and recently pregnant persons with some health conditions, such as obesity and gestational diabetes, may have an even higher risk of severe illness.
➡️Pregnant persons who are Black or Hispanic have a higher rate of illness and death from COVID-19 than other pregnant persons, but not because of biology. Black and Hispanic persons are more likely to face social, health, and economic inequities that put them at greater risk of illness.
➡️Pregnant persons with COVID-19 also may have an increased risk of preeclampsia and coagulopathy (a blood clotting disorder).
✔️Regarding COVID-19 infection during pregnancy:
➡️There is an increased risk of preterm birth.
➡️Possible increased risk of stillbirth.
➡️COVID-19 may pass to the fetus during pregnancy.
➡️After birth, reports have shown the following:
✅In babies born to those who had COVID-19 during pregnancy, there is an increased risk that the newborn will need care in a NICU.
✅A newborn can get the virus if they are exposed to it.
✔️Data confirms that COVID-19 vaccines are safe during pregnancy. ➡️Scientists have compared the pregnancies of persons who received COVID-19 vaccines and those who have not.
➡️The reports show that these persons have had similar pregnancy outcomes.
➡️Data do not show any safety concerns.
