▼Gotokuji Temple Overview
Gotokuji Temple is a Jodo Sect Buddhist temple located in Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan. It was established during the early Edo period and is known as the family temple for the Ii clan. This temple is renowned as the birthplace of the maneki-neko, or "beckoning cat." According to legend, Gotokuji's monk had a cat that beckoned a passing samurai, leading him into the temple, which ultimately contributed to the temple's prosperity. This story is considered the origin of the maneki-neko. Gotokuji is also a popular tourist attraction, drawing many visitors and worshippers with its multitude of beckoning cat statues.
