The Warsaw Uprising was a major World War II operation, in the summer of 1944, by the Polish Underground State. The purpose of the Uprising was to liberate the City of Warsaw from the German occupation before the arrival of the Red Army (Soviet forces), and thus to establish a legal pre-war government in Poland and to stop the Soviet Union from establishing a puppet communist regime in Poland. The uprising ended in the devastating defeat of Polish Partisans. During and after the fall of the Uprishing nazi germans and their collaborative troops murdered 200,000 civilians in Warsaw and destroyed 85% of the western part of the city.
In 1945, the Soviets and subordinated to them the Polish People's Army took over the city and established a communist regime dependent on the Soviet Union, later known as Polish People's Republic.
