Doc Severinsen & Clark Terry play Terry's composition, which came to be called "Terry Time", with the Tonight Show Orchestra on August 29, 1963. Video of this performance is not likely to have survived more than the seventeen months it was held for rebroadcast on Saturday, January 23, 1965. In the 1960's, the expensive two-inch video tapes which were used to "pre-record" the Tonight shows for broadcast at 11:15 PM (10:15 PM Central), were erased and reused for other programs. When NBC began weekend rebroadcasts of "memorable programs in the Tonight series" (as Ed McMahon introduced them), I began taping the audio of selected portions of many programs. For this post, I did my best to create a mini slide show to accompany the music. I made some "educated guesses" as to which of these all-time great trumpeters was soloing, as the guys traded eight-bar and four-bar phrases; and, I put a picture on the screen of who I thought was playing. I chickened out when they started blowing two-bar phrases near the end; so, I put pictures of both of them up there at the same time. My guesses could have been easier if Clark were playing flugelhorn, as he did frequently; or if the program had been broadcast in stereo. (No stereo TV in those days) If you have different opinions as to who is soloing at any time, I'd like to hear from you. Postscript: YouTuber Dr. Selfridge Music identified Clark Terry as the one who went first in the two-bar exchanges near the coda; and , I agree.
