This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In his talk, he asks, "What if democracy was more than voting for someone else to make decisions? What if making laws was a collaborative process between all citizens?" According to Joel, thanks to the internet, in some places, it already is. He shares his vision with how it can happen where you live, too.
Joel studies how to empower people using tech at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. While his main focus is on disadvantaged communities and developing nations, some of his recent research includes how certain countries are crowdsourcing legislation. His talk showcases the stories of what has and has not worked, and what we can do to bring on the next evolution of democracy.
Joel is originally from Seattle, WA. Learn more about his work, international travel, and studies at www.joelrputnam.com.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
