“What we throw away does not go away,” says “Her Deepness” marine biologist Sylvia Earle. In this Explorers Festival 2018 panel on plastic, hear from Earle as well as marine biologist and seahorse specialist Heather Koldewey, humanitarian journalist and Fulbright-National Geographic Storyteller Lillygol Sedaghat, environmental engineer Jenna Jambeck, marine biologist Imogen Napper, and moderator and Deputy to the Chief Scientist & VP of Scientific Programs at National Geographic Society Valerie Craig.
The panel explores the drastic impact plastic is making in the ocean, the grants National Geographic Society is funding to study plastic’s pathways down rivers, and some of the innovative ways to keep plastics from reaching the ocean in the first place—including bringing global attention to this critical issue.
National Geographic Explorers Festival brings together innovative scientists, conservationists, explorers, and storytellers from around the world to share their discoveries, insights, and solutions for creating a more sustainable future. The annual event welcomes National Geographic educators, fellows, grantees, and more back to Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. for a week of collaboration, conservation, and creativity. #NatGeoFest
