On Tuesday, December 27, 2022, the Angola Supreme Court ordered the seizure of several assets worth $1 billion in the possession of Isabel dos Santo, the daughter of the late President José Eduardo dos Santos. According to The East African, the court ordered the seizure of 70% of the shares of Mozambique telecommunications company Mstar, 70% of the shares in Upstar Comunicação, 100% of the shares of the UnitelL T+ in Cape Verde, and Unitel STP in Sao Tome and Principe. The court also ordered the seizure of her assets in Embalvidro, Unitel International Holding and Unitel International. The reason for the court order is alleged “embezzlement and other crimes,” according to The East African. In 2019, the Angolan authorities seized assets valued at $1.136 billion from Dos Santos for the same reasons. As stated by The East African, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists reported in 2020 that “Dos Santos siphoned hundreds of millions of dollars of public money into offshore accounts.” In August 2022, Dos Santos neglected to attend her father’s funeral because she feared being arrested by the Angolan authorities. Last month, Interpol issued an international warrant for her arrest.
