STORYLINE:
On Monday evening, a rocket fired from Gaza hit a car in the nearby Israeli town of Sderot, critically wounding a woman, who subsequently died of her injuries, and wounding two other people, said Israeli emergency services.
The attack came after Israel killed five Palestinian militants in airstrikes and indicated that Hamas political leaders could be their next target.
The rocket set the car on fire, and the woman could be seen lying face down on the ground near the fiercely blazing car, as paramedics rushed to her aid.
Officials said the woman, who was hit while approaching the car, died on the way to the hospital.
She was the first Israeli killed in a rocket attack since November.
The salvo came during a meeting in Sderot between Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Javier Solana, the European Union foreign policy chief. They were not harmed.
The pair held a press conference in Sderot soon after the rocket attack, at which Solana denounced the violence, and Livni called for international action "to put pressure on the terrorists and the Palestinian government and not compromise with terror."
At least 18 rockets were fired at Israel by Palestinian militants in Gaza on Monday, according to the military and Israeli media, bringing the total over the past week to more than 150.
