CLIMBING MECHANIC EXPLAINED

“While moving about, the Palaeophis keeps track of how connected it is with the terrain it is traversing. If the Palaeophis has sufficient contact with other, nearby objects, it has traction and can move about wherever it pleases. This means it can go up trees, steep slopes, rocks, the sides of caves, or up any other surface in-game. It has some other limitations, of course, but the intention is that it is able to traverse vertical objects such as this tree in a way that feels snake-like.
You can see in this video that the Palaeophis goes up the tree in a circular fashion. This helps keep the snake's body in contact with the tree, which results in sufficient connectedness to continue climbing. If the Palaeophis were to just go straight-up, it would probably lose traction and fall since the coils wouldn't wrap around the tree's collision as nicely. There's certainly some skill and finesse involved with climbing up things.
The state of connectedness is represented by the little yellow bar that shows up while climbing on the Palaeophis' UI. This bar hides while not climbing, and we'll likely make it look more unique as a UI element as well. If the bar hits empty, the snake will enter a falling state and will fall off whatever it's trying to climb. It helps you see how well-connected you are with the surface you're climbing so you can be careful if you're about to fall.”
