CAVILUX lasers are the ultimate source of illumination for processes that are too hot or bright to see, learn, and analyze otherwise. One of such bright process is PTWA.
The GTV PTWA (Plasma Transferred Wire Arc spray technology) is used in industrial applications such as coating cast engine blocks in the automotive industry. This method uses a high frequency ignition that can generate an arc from 60 to 150 Amps. The arc and the argon/hydrogen plasma then melts the wire which atomizes the molten wire tip and accelerates the droplets using compressed air towards the substrate leading to solidification and lamellar coating formation.
So why does GTV use PTWA coating for engine blocks? Because of the weight reduction, increased efficiency of oil retention, reduced friction, enhanced transfer of heat from cylinder wall to the cooling water circuit, and higher compression ratios without occurrence of glow ignition. This technique is used e.g. by Nissan, Caterpillar, Ford, VW, Porsche, and PSA. One specific example is the Ford Shelby Mustang which has a 5.4L V8 producing 550Hp/410kW; 690 nm.
