Timgad, a Roman city built for retired army veterans, is located on the edge of the Sahara Desert in modern-day Algeria. This exceptionally preserved Roman colony features a perfectly preserved grid plan, complete with a forum, theater, triumphal arch, temples, bathhouses, and even a library.
Unlike many other Roman colonies with similar grid patterns, Timgad stands out due to its remarkable state of preservation, providing the clearest glimpse into the layout and daily life of a Roman colony. The city boasted all the essential features of a typical Roman city, including a temple to Jupiter, markets, and public amenities, making it a miniature Rome at the far reaches of the empire.
In this video, we'll explore the monuments of Timgad and delve into how Rome rewarded its retired soldiers by establishing them in well-equipped colonies like Timgad.
