NYC Urban Project Director Jonathan Walton discusses generosity:
To me, Generosity is a radical commitment to giving
In the US there are 21 million illegal drug users.
That's 21 million men and women who use cocaine, meth, marijuana, heroin and prescription pills --- atleast 21million men and women who admit that they are committed to tithing to get high. The US spends 12 billion dollars a year on pornography, with no doubt thousands of hours by millions of people consuming explicit movies and images.
In the United States, 17 million people, that's 1 in 12 people abuses alcohol and we spend nearly 2 billion per week on drinking. What if the same commitment to addiction and abuse were seen in committed habitual giving. Testimonies of how lives were changed for the better instead of days not remembering what you did the night before. What if people followed Jesus, martin luther king and ghandi instead of just quoting what they say.
Addicts spend hours researching and asking friends where to go, where to buy, looking for the most for the best price. What if all of that diligence and research that we do to find another pair of shoes were given to children in our cities who need tutors.
Generosity looks like enough food being on every table, clothes to keep us warm, and shelter from the elements; and since we are six percent of the world's population and consuming 45% of it's resources I truly believe there's enough to go around.
To me, Generosity is a radical commitment to giving. Giving our time, our energy and our resources to love our neighbors as much as we love ourselves.
