Total War: SHOGUN 2 1vs1: Katana Cavalry vs Katana Samurai
Clan: Shimazu vs Takeda
Battle Difficulty: normal
In contrast to yari cavalry, the other mid-late game common cavalry, katana cavalry have a poorer charging bonus and no bonus against other cavalry. They are also slower-moving and have poorer stamina. However, they have superior melee, defense, armor, and morale. This makes them more suitable for prolonged melee fighting against infantry than yari cavalry, but makes them less suited in anti-cavalry or hit-and-run roles. Takeda Katana Cavalry have +2 attack, +1 defense, and +2 morale, while costing only 700 gold to train and 175 gold to maintain. When trained by the Date Clan, Katana Cavalry have +2 charge bonus.
Katana Samurai have good armour and average defence; they can withstand prolonged melee but, due to their lack of a bonus against cavalry, are highly vulnerable against them--particularly if charged from the flanks or rear. Katana Samurai are particularly valuable in the early-mid game, where other factions ubiquitously field Yari Ashigaru and Bow Ashigaru, with few fielding substantial cavalry or other anti-infantry forces. They still suffer if they have to fight frontally against a Yari Wall, however, and function best when attacking from the flank or rear, and particularly when they're well-rested and fighting downhill.
Shimazu Katana Samurai have +2 melee attack and +1 melee defense when compared to their standard counterparts. They are also cheaper to train and maintain (costing 650/125 instead of 750/150). In addition, while other clans can only recruit katana samurai after upgrading their training facilities, the Shimazu Clan can recruit katana samurai from the beginning of the campaign, from a region that gives them additional armor and melee attack. When trained by the Date Clan, Katana Samurai have +2 charge bonus. The Date similarly benefit from a blacksmith in their home region. Hattori Katana Samurai have kisho training, allowing them to be placed anywhere on the battlefield except the opponent's deployment zone during the deployment phase of a battle. They can also hide in light scrub.
